Are you feeling overwhelmed with clutter and dust? I looked over at my table the other day and yellow pollen covered the whole area by the patio door. It is incredible how dirty a home can get between the everyday living, not to mention the added pollen in the air and mud caused by recent rainfall. You begin to understand why “Spring Cleaning” is so popular. If you don’t have time to clean your home from top to bottom, deep cleaning these five spots in your home will make a huge difference.
Design. Build. Style is a YouTube channel that discusses 5 Spring Cleaning Musts. I like that it isn’t a long video and highlights the top five spots that need attention in most homes. She also gives pretty simple but good tips on how to clean each spot.
Baseboards
While baseboards are not the focal point of any room, cleaning them makes a huge difference. Dust and grime settle on top while scuff marks can leave unsightly smudges. Using a white eraser is a great tool, especially if you have white baseboards. You can also use your everyday cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth to clean them. Sometimes I use a damp mop to clean the entire baseboard. This method doesn’t break your back. Deep cleaning your baseboards freshens up your rooms, removes allergens, and enables you to tell if they need to be repainted.
Windows
A great time to wash windows is the springtime. First, the weather is usually beautiful and cool, which makes the chore more pleasant. Second, the sun isn’t shining too brightly creating streaks as it does in the summer. There are many methods to washing windows from soft washing with chemicals to washing with warm, soapy water and a rag. The video mentions using a combination of vinegar and water. Some people prefer to wipe windows dry while others prefer using a squeegee. I say do whatever works best for you, but washing your windows will make everything else seem cleaner.
Light Fixtures
Each room probably has a light fixture that needs some attention. They are often covered with dust and grime, which usually goes unnoticed until you look up. Start by wiping down the entire fixture with a damp microfiber. Then if it has glass elements, see if you can carefully remove them and wash with warm, soapy water. You can carefully wipe off each light bulb, too. Once the glass is dry, replace them back on the fixture. Once it is all back together and clean, you won’t believe the difference. Turn on the light and bask in its brightness.
Light Switches
These are a high traffic area in your house that rarely gets any attention unless you have obvious smudges. Think of all the people that use them throughout the day. It is a great idea to wipe them all down and remove any dirt, grime, and/or bacteria. You won’t necessarily notice the difference with this spot, but it should be cleaned anyway.
Vents
Again vents are not a spot that probably get regular maintenance in your home, but they are probably covered in dust from the air vents. It is the perfect time to remove those and wash away all the grime and allergens. Deep cleaning vents not only makes your home look more fresh, it could make the air more fresh as well.
If a whole house deep cleaning is overwhelming, make sure to clean these top five spots in your home. It shouldn’t take more than a weekend to tackle these chores and a lot less time if you include family members. You will enjoy the difference for months in your home. Happy cleaning!
