Sailing Takes Me Away

I grew up with Christopher Cross’s song, “Sailing”, blaring on the radio. “Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. Soon I will be free.” Please tell me that I am not the only one. Well, Lake Conroe just made the list for Best Sailing Lakes in Texas!

Sailing

The Life of Sailing rated the top 15 Texas lakes for sailing. Lake Conroe is #3 in the state! They were impressed with its 21,000 acres of water away from a huge city. Instead of city sights, on the shore are beautiful homes, hills, and forest. In fact the article states, “if you’ve ever dreamt of sailing deep in the forest, Lake Conroe is the best place to make your dreams come true.” Maybe they were fans of Christopher Cross, too. Or maybe sailing and dreams naturally go hand in hand.

Where to Sail on the Lake

Looking at a map of Lake Conroe, you will notice that a long bridge carrying FM 1097 crosses the lake. Many boaters say that the clearance is not high enough for a mast. Therefore, plan to sail on the southern part of the lake. You can put in at any public boat ramp. Of course if you are a resident, you can use your own or neighborhood’s ramp. According to SailNet Community, sailboats longer than 34+feet are on Lake Conroe. Since the average size of a sailboat is around 30 feet, the lake should be able to accommodate most sailing vessels.

Beyond Sailing

The article also promotes Lake Conroe’s fishing and boating as well as golfing and camping. PlanetWare rated Lake Conroe #1 in Best Fishing Lakes in Texas. Additionally, Lake Conroe is one of the best in the state for many reasons. You can read that article here. Many of the top-rated golf courses are also around the lake like Walden Golf Course.

In conclusion if you are looking for a well-rounded lake with much to offer, look no further than Lake Conroe. Whether you are visiting or enjoying the lake life as a resident, there are lots of things to do. If you haven’t tried sailing, you should definitely consider it. Check out the Lake Conroe Sailing Association. They are a club of sailing enthusiasts. Even if you sail solo, know that “sailing takes me away…and if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility.” Bon voyage!
