Historically, gray wolves roamed freely throughout the Lone Star State. Today none exist in Texas. They are considered endangered animals. However, you might not know that a wolf sanctuary exists close to the Lake Conroe area. So, today we are going to highlight the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary.
Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary
Location-
It is located in Navasota, Texas on a 15-acre parcel of land. Its physical address is: 6731 Pavlock Road, Navasota, TX 77868. The sanctuary offers tours. Just make sure to book a tour before driving out.
Purpose-
Their purpose is to provide compassionate care and a lifelong sanctuary to non-releasable wolves and/or wolfdogs. Another purpose is to provide education to the public and share the message of conservation.
Beginnings-
The Wolf Sanctuary began in 2002 with an illegally kept wolf named Mystery. The wolf suffered from not being taken care of by the previous owner as well as from being shot and caught in a trap when it escaped from its home. Fortunately for Mystery, a veterinarian nursed her to health but did not know what to do with her beyond that. However, Jean LeFevre met Mystery and decided to do whatever she could for the wolf. So the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary was born.
Visits-
The Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary would be a great place for clubs, scouts, 4-H groups, and more to consider visiting. The sanctuary runs tours throughout the year as well as special events. In fact, they are doing a Valentine’s Day event on Saturday, February 15th. You can spend time with your special someone learning about wolves and joining in Howl Night. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with the events at the sanctuary.
If you love wolves, nature, or conservation, the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary should be on your bucket list. It is an easy day trip to Navasota from the Lake Conroe area. Like most non-profit organizations, they are always looking for financial support. Help them by raising money or awareness as they make a home for the wolves and wolfdogs.
