As residents of a lake community, summer safety for families is very important. There are many facets of summertime safety. Today we are going to focus on three areas of safety to address.

Water Safety

Whether you are planning on being at the lake or poolside, water safety can mean the difference between life or death. Unfortunately drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 and the second cause of death for those between 5-14 years of age. The best way to combat the potential for drowning is learning how to swim.

There are several places that offer swimming lessons in the Lake Conroe area. For example, the Montgomery Aquatic Race Club offers lessons to the public. Sign up a child 4 and up. Fantastic Swim School offers semi-private lessons for children 3 and up. If you are looking to teach children as young as infants, check out AquaMobile Swim School. They offer private swim lessons from the comfort of your home. Of course, there are many other options in Conroe and The Woodlands.

Boat Safety

Related to water safety, boat safety is also very important to address. Unfortunately, Lake Conroe has its share of deaths from drownings and boat accidents. Make sure children have an approved US Coast Guard life-jacket. Abstaining from alcohol while on the water is also a great idea. If your child is 13 or older, they can take a boater safety course from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Heat Safety

The summer heat in Texas is always something to contend with whether on a boat or on land. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very serious. The best way to avoid either is by hydration. Plan ahead to have plenty of water available and make sure that your children are drinking it. Other beverages like alcohol or soft drinks can actually dehydrate you. Replace salt and minerals with sports drinks or electrolytes. Avoid being outside at the hottest times of the day, too.

During the Texas heat, summer safety for families is of the utmost importance. Between the water, boating, and the heat, you can avoid major problems with proper safety tips and actually enjoy your summer.
