May is National Barbecue Month. Regardless if you knew that or not, I’m sure that you won’t need your arm twisted to celebrate with a barbecue plate or sandwich. Barbecue is almost always a favorite for a Texan. So let’s look at the best local barbecue joints in Montgomery, Texas.

BAR-A-BBQ

This restaurant is new to Montgomery, Texas, and sits at 21149 Eva Street. BAR-A-BBQ might have a new location, but they have been making great barbecue since 2019. They specialize in Texas Craft BBQ. Last month, Texas Monthly highlighted BAR-A-BBQ in their magazine. Read the article here. They are open Wednesday through Saturday. Check them out!

McKenzie’s Barbeque & Burgers

McKenzie’s has two locations. One is in Conroe and the other is in Montgomery. The Montgomery location is 17099 Walden Rd #200. Since 1995, the McKenzie brothers have been perfecting their Texas BBQ. In fact, for 14 years in a row, they won the title of “Best Barbeque in Montgomery County.”

Y0′ Mama’s Pit Bar-B-Que

Yo’ Mama’s has been serving Montgomery, Texas for 26 years. They also specialize in Texas Barbecue. They are located at 300 John A Butler Street.

What Makes Texas Barbeque Unique?

If you travel around the United States, you know that each region has a unique distinction. Texas barbeque is known for a smoky, savory flavor gained by slow-smoking meat over a pit. Its main protein is beef brisket, unlike other regions which highlight pork. Within this genre of cooking, there are four types of Texas barbeque. They are East Texas, South Texas, West Texas, and Central Texas styles. Travel Texas also covered these differences in more depth. You can read about it here.

Beyond Montgomery, there are many other barbeque joints from Mom and Pop places to national chain restaurants. Many other restaurants like Phil’s Roadhouse serve barbeque, but I wanted to highlight three places dedicated to Texas Barbeque today. I hope you enjoy trying each restaurant and find a personal favorite. You don’t have to go far to find some great Texas barbeque during National Barbecue Month. And, you get the privilege of enjoying it year-round!
