The 2022 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HSLR) is in full swing through March 20th. Recently I posted about rodeo tickets going on sale. To read that post, click here. However if the rodeo is not your thing, no worries. There are tons of things you can do without attending the rodeo.

Livestock Shows

The livestock shows are some of my favorite ways to pass the time at HLSR. I grew up on a cattle ranch and all of my children have shown animals as members of 4-H. I know the hard work that goes into each animal project. Personally, I am more partial to the cattle and swine shows. Even if all this is new to you, it is still a great experience. You can appreciate the quality of animal in the show rings. Watching the judge do his/her thing, you can begin learning what he/she is looking for in the livestock. Additionally after walking all over the grounds, the shows are good way to rest your feet, too. Here is the schedule of events to see what days are which shows.

Food & Vendors

There are tons of places for you to buy food or go shopping. From fried Oreos to sausage on a stick, the food vendors sell a variety of fare. Kettle corn, turkey legs, funnel cakes, and fried cheesecake are examples of more of the traditional carnival foods you can buy. You can also get chopped beef barbecue sandwiches, fajitas, or a juicy cheeseburger. So many choices with only so much room in your tummy. Vendors from art to mattresses line the Reliant Center. Looking for a cowboy hat? Perhaps a personalized cowboy belt? You can find a wide variety of items in the “mall.”

Carnival

The kids and young at heart love the carnival. Huge Ferris wheels carry you high above the carnival grounds. You can see forever! A ski lift carries you from one side of the carnival to the other. Bottle toss to roller coaster rides vie for your attention. Win your love a human-sized stuffed animal. All of these things are possible at the Carnival.

For $15 an adult, you can enter the 2022 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo grounds. Spend the whole day seeing the sights. From art, to quilts, to the Kid Zone, your day will be filled with fun, educational activities. There is more to the HLSR than just the rodeo.
